Community Connections

Adults with mental retardation served by our Community Connections program participate in vocational and social activities that increase independence and enhance community integration.

Vocational options include group supported and competitive employment.

Individuals who can perform all tasks required by an employer, but who may need initial support to identify abilities, secure a job or learn new skills, are ideal candidates for "Competitive Employment." We help adults understand their work-related abilities by creating on-the-job assessments, and assist adults with their job search. Based on the assessment, we may also be able to provide coaching support to new employees during their initial employment period. And we will maintain ongoing communication between the employee and employer to ensure mutual satisfaction and job retention. Referrals for competitive employment as accepted from the CT Department of Developmental Services.

Adults who would benefit from ongoing supervision and training have the option of working in a "Supported Employment"
setting. Depending on an adult's ability and interest, the work placement may be an individual one with a specific employer, or may be with a small team of adults in our facility, with a specific employer in the community, or at a variety of locations, i.e. our cleaning service.

Typical work assignments include food service, janitorial, grounds-keeping, retail, assembly, packing and other light manufacturing tasks. To be eligible to participate, adults must be referred by the CT Department of Developmental Services.

Adults who are unable to perform vocational tasks or who are no longer interested in working can choose our Day Service Option program. Participants engage in a variety of individual and group activities that achieve community inclusion, enjoyment and skill building. Typical activities include: bowling, arts & crafts, baking, yoga, movement & exercise, gardening, picnics at the beach, field trips and more. The program also helps participants build skills in socialization and skills of daily living.
