ParenTEEN provides counseling, parenting education and guidance to approximately 40 pregnant and parenting teens each year so that they can complete school, provide for their families, and raise healthy children.
The range of support offered is as varied as the needs of the individuals served: help finding housing and childcare; information on maternity, parenting, and child development; help with anger management and resolving relationship issues; linkages with social service providers; support with emotional issues; assistance with medical and social service appointments, etc. The children of teen parents receive developmental screenings to facilitate appropriate development and aid early identification of any developmental delays.
Utilizing a “Parents as Teachers” curriculum, parenting teens – both male and female – learn parenting skills and increase their understanding of child development.
ParenTEEN is held at West Haven High School, the West Haven Community House, and in the homes of pregnant and parenting teens. Enrollment is open to pregnant or parenting teens 21 years of age or younger who reside in West Haven.
The ParenTEEN program also works with health teachers at local middle schools to discourage middle students from early sexual activity and parenting.
ParenTEEN was selected in 2004 as a United Way of Greater New Haven "Touch A Life" award winner.
